Diss Tracks
Not all Diss tracks are rap songs, this episode talks about diss tracks from Artists like David Bowie… Le Tigre… and Lynyrd Skynyrd (Sweet Home Alabama is a diss track… that’s right). It’s a good primer about the origins of diss tracks and how the drama plays out into the music.

6ix9ine vs. Everybody
With the recent arrest of 6ix9ine it’s apropo to hear exactly what happened, what charges he’s facing (he’s up against a life-sentence) and how his meteoric rise to success grinds up against his criminal past. Also just hearing about the more intricate protocols of “street” run music is in itself worth it. (ie: The concept of “Checking-In” when you have a show at a city you’re not from)

The Last Podcast On The Left
Biggie vs. Tupac (1/3)
The East Coast vs West Coast rap beef that ended in tragedy (the course of music would’ve changed if they were around) gets the Last House on the Left treatment (their thing is “talking through the facts” with jokes) gets into this beef from laying the grander context of the early 90s to the details of the shooting and the people around them. It’s a three parter but it’s worth your time.

Kanye vs. Kanye
The most interesting conflict is the conflict you have with yourself and in Kanye’s case his multitude of selves. Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris in this episode talks about Kanye’s latest album Ye and earnestly tries to separate the man vs. the artist. The George W. Bush Kanye vs the Trump Kanye. The Before Donda vs After Donda Kanye. There’s a lot of chit-chatting in the beginning so you can jump ahead from the episode page.

On Shuffle
Drake vs. Pusha T
A reignited beef that started with the Clipse vs Young Money and a by product of the Wyoming Sessions (the 5, seven song Kanye produced albums that were recorded in Wyoming), the hottest beef since Jay-z and Nas, and the most personal attacks yet… This episode breaks down the tracks that each dished out.
Rap Beef

The diss track; a culmination of all the drama, the conflict, the platform, and the talent that loops back into the music itself is the topic we’re focusing on this week. When the conflict becomes an artifact of the records that come out of it, we lose sight of the real hurt that it can cost people surrounded by it and its escalatory nature. From the slick personal attacks to actually taking away people’s lives this issue breaks down all the surrounding context that is often dismissed when rap beef is sensationalized. I definitely made this issue sound less enjoyable but I promise you it’s not!
